Abstract

The paper deals with the seismic behaviour of Submerged Floating Tunnels (SFTs). SFT is an innovative structure for waterway crossings, consisting of a tunnel placed underwater at a certain depth below the free surface and fixed in position by anchorage cables. Thanks to the deformability of the overall cable system, SFTs represent a reliable solution for strait crossings even in high seismicity zones. Aiming at the seismic time domain analysis, ground multi-support excitation have been determined through the generation of synthetic accelerograms by simulating the fault breaking mechanism. Reference case studies are characterized by different tunnel lengths and cable system arrangements. Despite the complexity of the seismic behaviour some trends and peculiarities of the SFT response have been identified and highlighted, leading to a significant enrichment of the knowledge in this field.
